What is Cultural Capability and why does it matter?
Think of cultural capability like a map — it helps you see the land, learn the tracks, and find better routes together.
Cultural awareness is spotting landmarks on that map (you notice differences)
Cultural competence is learning the local trails and how to travel them respectfully (you know what to do and say)
Cultural intelligence (CQ) is reading changing weather and planning new routes — adapting your behaviour, asking better questions, and bringing others with you.
Cultural capability is using all of those map-smarts to shape everyday systems, policies and relationships so everyone moves more easily together.
We’re not just building awareness — we’re building CQ and cultural capability that turns understanding into action.
Why does this matter?
- It makes systems more robust and inclusive — services and processes actually work for people and place, not just a few.
- It lifts outcomes and wellbeing for Māori, which in turn strengthens teams, trust and community relationships across the board.
- It sparks smarter decisions and better long-term value — less waste, more innovation, and healthier people and environment all round.
When businesses combine excellence in what they do with cultural intelligence in how they do it, they build stronger, more trusted relationships with Māori.
Better relationships = Better outcomes for all.
I’m here to help you read the map, cross the bridge, and make sense of both worlds.
